An 84-81 win at the Northgate Arena saw the TCS Chester Jets move ahead of the Birmingham Bullets in the BBL Championship rankings on Sunday night.
With both sides desperate for a win, the Bullets were in front until the home side tied the game at 13 mid-way through the first period. The Jets got their noses in front and an 8-2 start to the second quarter extended their lead to 28-19. Birmingham responded immediately and posted a 10-2 burst to trail by just one at 30-29.
Across the half-time interval the reigning BBL Champions outscored their visitors by 15-5 to take a 45-34 lead but they couldn’t shake the Bullets off as they bounced back with a 10-3 burst to reduce the deficit to three. However, the Jets edged clear again as two three-pointers to end the quarter from Jamal Brown gave them a double-digit lead (59-49).
Birmingham ate into that lead and it was down to three at 72-69 with 3:30 left in the ball game. Chester scored the next 5 points and despite a three-point barrage, including three from Adam Williams, in the last 1:30, the Jets held on.
Phillip Gilbert led the scoring with 29 points, backed up by 21 from Shawn Myers for Chester. Jeff Bonds led the Bullets with 26.
